SUMMARY:Keynote: Create the Way Forward: Creativity as Strength\, Strategy\, and Care
DESCRIPTION:Arts teachers are experts in the creative process\, yet rarely are invited to apply that expertise to the systems they work within. This interactive keynote reframes creativity as a tool for strengthening programs\, supporting mental health\, and sustaining energy in the face of constraint.\n\nParticipants will engage in reflective and collaborative moments that connect artistic practice to leadership\, advocacy\, and care for themselves\, their students\, and their communities. By drawing on shared creative language across disciplines\, the session affirms creativity as a superpower that helps arts programs not just survive\, but evolve with intention and hope.\n

SUMMARY:Contemporary Dance Lab: Training Specificity
DESCRIPTION:As a choreographer\, the weakest skillset I often see when dancers enter a creative process is improvisation and the ability to generate material. How can we begin introducing these skills to dancers at a younger age in order to propel the form forward? This lecture will explore two essential avenues of training: developing critical thinking (or “dance IQ”) and cultivating physical specificity. We’ll begin with physical training focused on enhancing range\, power\, and functional capacity in key muscles and joints\, using approaches drawn from various contemporary dance methods. In the second half\, we’ll shift to improvisation techniques aimed at developing specificity in movement choices and generating clear choreographic material for creative processes.

SUMMARY:Directing with Intention: Fast\, Flexible\, Student-Centered Staging for Musicals
DESCRIPTION:Musical theatre thrives on momentum\, musical\, emotional\, and communal. This workshop invites theatre teachers to rethink efficiency not as control\, but as clarity\, trust\, and intention.\n\nParticipants will learn a director’s toolkit for staging musical numbers quickly while preserving narrative integrity and expanding student agency. We’ll focus on how to set strong objectives\, read the emotional architecture of music\, and use stage space as a storytelling partner. Rather than dictating movement\, directors learn how to shape environments where students discover solutions that serve character and story.\n\nThis session is for educators who want rehearsals that move faster and feel more alive—and who believe that students do their best work when they are trusted as artists.

SUMMARY:The Scavenger Music Teacher: Supporting Elementary Music Educators Through the Collective Community
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we will explore the notion of the scavenger music teacher. This idea arose during my dissertation study with teachers expressing that they lacked the needed knowledge for unfamiliar musics and being overwhelmed by all there is to consume or learn. Through my research\, I found that drawing on the collective community and reflexive work were beneficial for changes to teacher perspective and practice. Come prepared to explore ways that we can draw on the collective music community to surpass barriers such as lack of knowledge of unfamiliar musics and what to do when feeling so overwhelmed with how to proceed.

SUMMARY:Finding Organic Movement and Ensemble building through Viewpoints
DESCRIPTION:Developing an ensemble that can work\, intrinsically with each other is at the core of a good creative team. There is also a need to present exciting and dynamic movement as well as an organization of space to create engaging theatre with. SUMMARY:From Omission to Inclusion: Embedding Marginalized Histories in Arts Education
DESCRIPTION:In this interactive session\, participants will explore the powerful local history of Charles Daniels\, a Black Calgarian whose 1914 civil rights case remains one of the earliest known legal challenges to racial segregation in Western Canada. Using Cheryl Foggo's "Kicking Up a Fuss"\, a comprehensive arts‑based resource featuring documentary film\, poetry\, movement\, and primary archival materials\, we will guide attendees through strategies for engaging with sensitive historical content\, and facilitate discussions around primary sources that contain harmful or outdated language. Educators will have the opportunity to move through lesson plans designed for Visual Arts\, Drama\, Music\, English Language Arts\, and Dance\, experiencing first‑hand how arts disciplines can act as catalysts for representation\, empathy\, and social justice learning. By the end of the session\, teachers will leave with practical\, adaptable tools to embed culturally responsible storytelling into their classrooms\, ensuring that students not only learn history\, but see themselves reflected within it\, feel empowered to advocate for equity\, and understand the transformative power of the arts in shaping a more inclusive society.
